The History of Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday was created by two organizations, the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation in 2012, after the American Thanksgiving, to remind people about the true importance of the “giving season”. Their intention was to set aside a day to encourage individuals, families, schools, businesses, and other organizations to give to the less fortunate because this time of the year should be more than just about consumerism and commercialization.

Many companies such as Sony, Aldo, Groupon, UNICEF, Google, Skype, Microsoft, and Unilever, after learning about the campaign and its aims quickly joined in. The first Giving Tuesday was covered by big newspapers which made the event very popular in a short period of time.

How to Celebrate Giving Tuesday

There are many ways to celebrate this day, from giving a hug to making a donation.

According to the blog Days of the Year, local hospitals, volunteer fairs, community projects, nursing homes, orphanages, organizations that help immigrants “… could use your help, so find a cause that is especially important to you personally, whether it’s fighting a certain type of cancer, helping to buy schoolbooks for children from very poor families, or helping the animals at your local animal shelter, and take action! However you choose to celebrate the day, you can then share your story with Giving Tuesday’s official website to spread the word to the entire world.” (2018)

Today is Giving Tuesday, and many organizations and people around the world celebrate this occasion by helping those in need. Let’s follow this example and give a gesture of affection or a donation to anyone who might need it.
