February 11th: Science in the lives of women that will change the world

February 11th is a special day for all of our beautiful scientists because on December 22nd 2015, the UNESCO General Assembly decided to establish it as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science to recognize the critical role they play in science and technology.

In our school, our science classes give us the opportunity to promote our ideas, demonstrate our talent and creativity by creating things and discovering how objects work through experiments and projects.

All the work we do and what we learn make us feel like real scientists who are always looking for ways to help the environment.

Science here is mostly taught through projects and hands-on activities following the constructive and scientific methods in which students are part of their own learning following steps such as: asking a question or expressing a doubt, doing research through observation, formulating a hypothesis, experimenting and analyzing the results. These steps are guided by our teachers according to the requirements for each grade and, at the end, the students are capable of presenting a conclusion and differentiating processes as well as relating them to their life experiences.

These methods help students to learn and practice while they create, gather information, analyze and communicate. These skills will later develop their critical thinking and help them solve problems anywhere and anytime.

As girls, we think that we are the ones that will have to save the planet and that we need to start doing something now. We’ve learned about climate change, we’ve seen how plastic affects the world, the things that are happening now and we’ve also acquired knowledge about nature and all its elements to understand better what our role is here on this planet.

If we have the opportunity to be part of a science community as girls, we are pretty sure that, in the future, we will be ready to get involved in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and Mathematics) fields or industries and become an asset for society.
